What is the Correct Curtain and Drapery Length?

Curtain lengths are an often-discussed topic at Cindy's & Bolliger Window Fashions. Yet there isn’t one correct answer; it depends on the style, window size, ceiling height, and overall aesthetic you want to achieve. We use standard drapery lengths as guidelines, employ tried-and-true strategies, and our clients always have beautiful results.

Common Curtain and Drapery Length Options

Most curtains and drapes are available in standard drapery lengths: 63, 84, 96, and 108 inches. So, how do you determine which size to order? Measure from the floor up to the top of your window; then, measure from the top of your window to the ceiling. We recommend mounting the hardware 10 inches over the window or 3 inches below your ceiling.

If you're unsure, it’s better to choose a slightly longer option because it can be hemmed. If the curtain length is too short, there will be gaps.

There are also different ways to style drapery lengths. When curtains touch the floor, a room feels larger. The average curtain length is about ¼–½ inches from the floor, but you can leave an inch of space for a more casual feel. Or, add 2 to 10 inches of fabric for a luxurious look and let it “puddle” on the floor.

Types of Curtains and Drapes

Curtains come in various styles to suit different interior designs. Understanding the differences can help you choose the best option for your space.

  • Sheer Curtains: Light and airy, sheers allow natural light to filter through gently while maintaining some privacy. They are ideal for layering with other window treatments, like blinds.
  • Blackout Drapes: These are perfect for bedrooms or media rooms where blocking light is a priority. Blackout drapes also provide insulation.
  • Tab-Top Curtains: This style features loops of fabric that slide over the curtain rod for a casual look.
  • Grommet Drapes: Grommet panels slide easily with metal eyelets and have a modern, streamlined appearance.
  • Pinch-Pleat Drapes: A tailored option often used in formal settings, pinch pleats create a classic, elegant look.
  • Rod Pocket Curtains: These slip over the rod for a clean, minimalist style and work well in traditional spaces.

Benefits of Curtains and Drapes

Custom curtains and drapes offer more than just good looks—they also serve practical purposes.

  • Privacy: Whether you need full coverage or partial privacy, curtains provide a barrier between your home and the outside.
  • Light Control: Sheer panels diffuse sunlight, while blackout options can block it entirely,
  • Energy Efficiency: Heavier drapery can insulate windows, reducing drafts and lowering energy costs.
  • Versatility: With so many styles and lengths, they can complement any interior design scheme.
  • Acoustics: Thick fabrics help reduce echo and noise, making spaces feel more comfortable and cozy.
